Transgression in Pleasure, Desire, and Gender

Issues of Euro-aesthetics’ propriety, commodification, and consumerism, explored in the previous chapter, stressed the particularities of French Caribbean transgressive texts. More precisely, I underlined how the process of corpomemorial tracing, the sensorial aesthetics, and the poetics of negation operate within them and serve the uncommodifiable nature of their protagonists. This final chapter focuses on scandalous and ecstatic female characters whose relationships to sex and sexuality mold on transgressive jouissance, gender-based violence, and pain. Literary works by Maryse Condé, Fabienne Kanor, and Gisèle Pineau will illustrate black women’s embodied experiences at the juncture of sex, the ecstatic, violence, jouissance, and transgressive voyeuristic narratives. Crossing genres and geographical and cultural borders, I put their transgressive representations in conversation with Julia Kristeva’s theory of jouissance as well as depictions of black women’s libido cultivated by African influenced art movements such as Primitivism and Negro Art. Highlighting notions of pleasure and desire, I consider the distinctive transactions employed by Pablo Picasso, Mambour, and Gauguin to stress by what means they contrast with the works of Caribbean painters Béatrice Mélina and Michel Rovélas.
